About the setting:
The St Mary’s River forms the South Eastern boundary between the states of Georgia and Florida. It is approximately 130 miles long, emerging from the Eastern edge of the Okefenokee Swamp and then taking a meandering path south then east then north and finally east south east into the Atlantic Ocean.
It is a black water river, so called because the rotting vegetation in the river makes the water appear tea-coloured. It is a popular place for kayaking. However, it is tidal and low water increases the journey time considerably.
It is a river teaming with sunfish, bass and alligators.
